Parking Lot LED Lighting what is it ?

The light-emitting diode (LED) is one of the most energy-efficient  lighting technologies available today. The first visible-spectrum LED was invented in 1962. Since then, the technology has rapidly advanced and costs have dropped tremendously, making LEDs a viable lighting solution. In 2012, about 49 million LEDs were installed in the U.S. Quality LED lighting last longer, are more durable, and offer comparable or better light quality.

A light-emitting diode, or LED, is a type of solid-state lighting that uses a semiconductor to convert electricity into light. Energy Savings LED is a highly energy efficient lighting technology, and has the potential to fundamentally change the future of lighting in the United States. Today’s LED can be six-seven times more energy efficient than conventional  lighting and cut energy use by more than 80 percent.

Good-quality LED bulbs can have a useful life of 25,000 hours or more -- meaning they can last more than 25 times longer than traditional light bulbs. That is a life of more than three years if run 24 hours a day, seven days a week.  Unlike incandescent bulbs  which release 90 percent of their energy as heat. LEDs use energy far more efficiently with little wasted heat.

LED lighting viable characteristics, which include compact size, ease of maintenance, resistance to breakage, and the ability to focus the light in a single direction instead of having it go every which way.

How are LEDs Different, LED lighting is very different from other lighting sources such as incandescent bulbs and fluorescent lamps. Key differences include the following: Light Source: LEDs are the size of a fleck of pepper, and a mix of red, green, and blue LEDs is typically used to make white light.

LEDs emit light in a specific direction, reducing the need for reflectors and diffusers that can trap light. This feature makes LEDs more efficient for many uses. With other types of lighting, the light must be reflected to the desired direction and more than half of the light may never leave the fixture.

LEDs emit very little heat. In comparison, incandescent bulbs release 90% of their energy as heat and CFLs release about 80% of their energy as heat. The light-emitting diode (LED) is one of today's most energy-efficient and rapidly-developing lighting technologies.

LED Lighting is it the answer ?

Every one that sells them seems to think so, LEDs after all have a rated life of 25,000 plus hrs of life right? I have heard of some that last 50,000 hrs.....   Ok lets see, there are 4,417  per year dusk to dawn lighting hrs so that would put an LED luminaire life at 6-12 years. Lets look at the average manufacturer warranty of the LED Luminaire 2,3,5 years... wow what a ROI, maybe.

Just about every LED warranty  has a disclaimer. A primary concern is a variation in voltage as this will void the warranty.

A variation in voltage, usually a spike in voltage increases the amps to the fixture causing failure. About the only reasonable means of protecting your investment is to place a surge protector into the distribution control circuit. Another concern is often times a fixture is obsolete in 5-10 years or there may not be  any repair components available. In that case buying a new fixture may be the only resolve. One thing is for sure LED manufacturers are not going to put themselves out of business.

Lighting System maintenance

Lighting systems lose efficiency over time. Some of these losses are inevitable. Light sources naturally degrade as they age. But other efficiency losses, dirt accumulation on fixture lenses, reflectors, and lamps; or controls drifting out of calibration, can be avoided by regularly scheduled maintenance .Cleaning.Lighting levels can decrease by as much as 15% without proper cleaning . Cleaning dirt and dust off lamps and their covers keeps light output at the maximum level .

Lighting covers and diffusers darken with age and will eventually need replacement, but regular cleaning should extend their useful life . Group relamping.A planned group relamping program is typically more cost effective than spot replacing burnouts. .With group relamping, a number of lamps are replaced at the same time—usually at 60%–80% of rated lamp life .

This process usually results in higher lamp costs, which may be more than offset by lower labor costs . Stores will also enjoy brighter and more uniform lighting because all lamps will be replaced at similar points in the degradation process, before their output fully degrades.  Inspect lighting control systems regularly to ensure that lights are off when spaces are unoccupied or to take advantage of daylighting opportunities. Evaluate and adjust automatic timers as needed.

Led neon sign company

Sign Services.

The sign  industry has had very radical changes over the last few years . Neon, LED and Electrical.   Neon   is almost  obsolete. Full Color Digital has replaced cut vinyl. The  Electric  sign   will soon   become LED illuminated  (a welcomed  change). Today's new  installs are  almost all  LED  channel. Very  few  companies manufacture signs. UL certification and requirements closed down most local in house manufacturing. A lot of signs now are  shipped  from several large manufacturers for  installation by local sign service companies.

LED Retrofit of Neon Sign Systems, is it worth the cost to replace my Neon letters with LED illumination ? In most applications the answer is yes. Ease of repair and lower energy usage are certainly worth considering. LED Sign Service is usually a one call repair, where  a Neon Sign requires glass letters to be custom made off site and transported back to the sign for installation adding to the cost of operating a Neon Sign System.

What is a LED Sign Retrofit ? Retrofitting a Neon Sign is the removal of all the glass Neon letters and Neon power supplies then installing  LED modules into the pre-existing channel letters. Neon transformers are replaced with 12-24 vdc electronic power supplies.  LED sign systems are still vulnerable to power fluctuations just like LED lighting and carry the same limited warranties.

When is  it feasible to retrofit my Neon Sign, basically you should consider a LED retrofit of your Neon sign at the time of your next Neon outage. When you consider the cost for several Neon replacement letters and a Neon transformer you are most likely at 2/3 the cost of the LED Sign retrofit.
